His teaching experience embodied most every form
and type of underwater breathing equipment. He was a YMCA Scuba
Instructor from 1960 to 1966, and a NAUI SCUBA Instructor "Lifetime"
since 1966. In 1968, while on active military duty, He participated
in the development of curriculum and taught during the first semester
of the Santa Barbara Marine Technology program. Upon military
retirement in 1971, he worked for the U.S. Government as a technical
strategic planner for underwater programs. Barney became an ANDI
Safe Air Instructor in 1997 and an MDEA Rebreather
Instructor Evaluator.
Barney, "During my life as a diver I have used
and abused the marine environment. I was late to realize the fragileness
of the water world. I designed the FROG rebreather to be more
compatible with sea life. I hope my efforts will compensate for
my many offences to sea life. Better something than nothing".
